As a mom to three small kids, I know how it feels to dread the dinnertime hour.

I didn’t want to spend dinnertime listening to a bunch of complaining or refusals to eat.

In hopes that I could get my kids to eat what I cooked, I tried negotiations (okay, only eat three more bites of potatoes!), bribing with rewards (just two bites of salad and you can have dessert!), and tough love (if you’re hungry, you’ll eat it!).

I even resorted to short-order cooking just to have a reprieve from the nightly crying and whining and fussing that often accompanied meals and threatened to make my head explode.

The trouble was, none of these efforts were working.

I found myself completely frustrated from spending my precious time cooking a tasty meal, yet feeling like a failure because my kids wouldn’t eat what I made.

That’s when I realized I was making mealtime harder than it had to be.

I began simplifying how I handled my “picky eaters.” I stopped making something different for everybody. I stopped the negotiations, bribing, and tough love.

Now, I know we’ll be able to enjoy a meal together that doesn’t require me to spend all of my energy managing everyone’s preferences.

I know we are setting rhythms of family mealtime into our kids’ lives, creating an anchor point of meaningful connection in our day.

No, my kids still don’t eat everything I cook! But we’ve completely transformed how we approach mealtime, so it’s now a positive experience instead of one that I dread everyday.
