Ingredients

For the Filling:

  • 4 medium to large apples (peeled and thinly sliced)
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 Tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 Tablespoon cornstarch

For the Topping:

  • 1 cup Bisquick baking mix
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter (melted)

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350F. Grease an 8x8-inch baking dish or a 2-quart baking dish. You can also use a 9-inch deep dish pie plate. Set aside.
  • In a large mixing bowl, prepare filling by combining apples, sugar, cinnamon, lemon juice, and cornstarch. Toss to coat the apples evenly with the mixture. Pour the mixture into the prepared baking dish.
  • In a small mixing bowl, combine Bisquick, sugar, and melted butter. Stir together until a slightly crumbly dough has formed and there are no dry patches in the dough. I usually start mixing with a spoon and finish with my fingers.
  • Sprinkle the pieces of dough evenly over the top of the apple mixture. Transfer to preheated oven and bake for about 60 minutes, or until the filling is bubbly and the topping is golden-brown.
  • Remove from oven and let cool for at least 10-15 minutes before serving. This will allow the filling to thicken a bit. Then serve and enjoy!

Notes

  • We like to serve this crisp warm, topped with either vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
  • Leftovers can be covered well and refrigerated for up to 2-3 days.
  • If you don't mind the peel being on the apples, you can skip the step of peeling them.
  • I like to use this Johnny Apple Peeler to do the work of peeling and slicing the apples. I've had mine for many years and it still works great!
