Making Trifle with Christmas Tree Cakes
A trifle is just a fancy word for a simple layered dessert that often combines cake, pudding or custard, fruit, and whipped topping.
For this version, we’re putting an easy but festive spin on it by using Little Debbie cakes as the base.
Similar to my red velvet cake trifle, the cake pieces get layered with the other ingredients, making a creamy, sweet treat that feels lighter than most desserts, but still indulgent.
To give your Christmas Tree Cake Trifle that nostalgic look we all love, spread whipped topping across the top and decorate with a zigzag of red icing and a sprinkle of green sugar–just like what you see on the cakes.
For the perfect finishing touch, add an extra Christmas Tree Cake right on top. It makes the whole dessert look festive, playful, and ready for any holiday table.

- Instant Vanilla Pudding Mix

Prepare the pudding mix. First, you’ll whisk the vanilla pudding mix and cold milk together for about two minutes, until thickened.
Then, use a spatula to gently fold in 1 cup of the whipped topping until smooth. This helps ensure the pudding is lighter and creamier than just plain pudding would be.

Layer the trifle. Then, in a large glass trifle dish (or individual serving cups, if preferred), you’ll layer a third of the Christmas Tree Cake pieces on the bottom of the dish.
Then add a layer of a third of the pudding mixture, followed by a layer of half of the berries. Repeat the layers until all ingredients are used, ending with a pudding layer.

Decorate the top. Then, you’ll top with the remaining cup of whipped topping, spreading it evenly over the surface.
Chill the dish for at least 2 hours before serving.
When you’re ready to serve it, use red icing to pipe wavy lines over the top of the whipped topping. Sprinkle with green sprinkles to give the look of a Christmas Tree Cake.

At this point, you can serve it just like that. If you want to decorate it a bit more, you can garnish with additional sliced strawberries and a whole Christmas Tree Cake.

Notes and Adaptations:
- You can buy a tube of red icing in the baking aisle of the grocery store. Green sanding sugar sprinkles most closely resemble the sprinkles on a Christmas Tree Cake.
- To keep the colors from bleeding into the whipped topping, wait until just before serving to decorate.
- Leftovers can be tightly covered and refrigerated for up to 3-5 days.
