When I am planning family meals, there are a few questions I ask myself before a meal makes the cut. Does it taste good? Is it filling? Is it relatively simple? Do I have the ingredients on hand?
When it comes to Instant Pot Pork Chops and Rice, I know I can check every single one of those boxes.
Meals with simple ingredients that I keep in my pantry and fridge are among my favorite to make.
Because let’s be honest–no one wants to have to run to the store for that one ingredient that’s missing.
And with this recipe, you won’t have to!
Like my creamy Instant Pot chicken and rice, this pressure cooker pork chops and rice makes excellent use of pantry ingredients.
Seasonings aside, there are only 5 ingredients in this recipe: pork, broth, rice, cheese and oil.
There is some wiggle room on the seasonings, so use the flavors you love if you don’t have the ones I’ve suggested.
The Instant Pot was designed to cook great meals quickly and save you time, and this Instant Pot pork chops casserole is one of those meals that will remind you why you love using your pressure cooker so much!

Tips For Making Instant Pot Pork Chops and Brown Rice
- Season well – Pork and rice borrow flavor from other ingredients in the dish. Seasoning the pork chops well will impart flavor throughout the whole dish. If you don’t have the seasonings I have, use what you have on hand. Some different options include taco seasoning, smoked paprika, lemon pepper, and chili powder.
- Sear – Searing the chops browns them and brings so much flavor. The best part is you can sear the pork directly in the Instant Pot using the Saute function.
- Deglaze – After searing the pork, remove it and deglaze the pan with water and scrape well with a wooden spoon. Leaving bits of cooked food on the bottom can get a BURN warning on your Instant Pot. This simple step prevents that.
- Layer – Add the rice and the stock, making sure the rice is spread out and submerged under the stock. Then return the pork chops to the Instant Pot. This will ensure that all of your rice is tender.
How to Make Instant Pot Pork Chops and Rice
It’s really easy to make this Instant Pot Pork Chops Casserole.
Ingredients You’ll Need:
- Garlic Powder
- Paprika
- Onion Powder
- Italian Seasoning
- Salt
- Pepper
- Bone-in Pork Chops
- Olive Oil
- Chicken Broth
- Dry Brown Rice
- Shredded Cheese
How to Make It:
(Full printable recipe is available below)
Season the pork chops. First, you’ll combine garlic powder, paprika, onion powder, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper and sprinkle over both sides of the pork chops.
Sear the pork chops. Next, you’ll heat oil in the Instant Pot using the saute function. Sear the pork chops for 2-3 minutes on both sides and remove them to a plate.
Cook the rice and pork chops. Deglaze the pan with a bit of broth, scraping the bottom to remove any stuck-on bits. Then, you’ll add in the brown rice and the remaining chicken broth.
Stir and top with the pork chops. Cook for 22 minutes at high pressure, followed by a natural release of pressure.
Make the cheesy rice. Last, you’ll remove the pork chops to a plate. Chop or shred with a fork and discard the bones. Stir cheese into the rice and allow it to melt. Add the pork back to the rice and serve.
Notes and Adaptations:
- I use brown rice instead of white rice in this recipe because its cook time is closer to that of pork chops.
- Although pork chops will technically cook in less time in the pressure cooker, I find longer cook times produce more tender pork chops.
- If you want to omit the cheese, I would recommend decreasing the amount of water to 1 cup, otherwise it will be somewhat soupy.
Recommended Equipment:
- Instant Pot or other electric pressure cooker
Instant Pot Pork Chops and Rice
Tender pork chops combine with flavorful brown rice in this hearty dinner!
Ingredients
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1/2 tsp paprika
- 1/2 tsp onion powder
- 1 tsp Italian seasoning
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp pepper
- 2 large bone-in pork chops, each about 1" thick
- 1 TBSP olive oil
- 1 1/4 cup chicken broth
- 1 cup dry brown rice
- 1/2 cup shredded cheese
Instructions
- In a small bowl, combine garlic powder, paprika, onion powder, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper.
- Place pork chops on a plate and generously sprinkle seasoning over both sides, using your fingers to rub the seasonings into the pork.
- Add olive oil to the insert pot of the Instant Pot. Use the Saute function to heat the oil.
- Once oil is hot, add pork chops to the pot, cooking for about 2-3 minutes on each side, until golden-brown.
- Remove seared pork chops to a plate and press Cancel to turn off the Saute function. Add broth to the pot and use a spatula or wooden spoon to scrape up any browned bits from the bottom of the pot (this is important for preventing the Burn error).
- Add brown rice to the broth and stir to combine, then add the pork chops back into the liquid.
- Close the lid and set the vent to the sealed position. Select a cook time of 22 minutes at high pressure.
- Once the cook time is complete, allow a natural release. If you are in a hurry, you can do a 10-minute natural release, followed by a quick release of remaining pressure.
- After the pressure has released, carefully remove the lid. Remove pork chops to a cutting board or plate.
- Stir shredded cheese into the rice and allow it to melt. The liquid will thicken as it cools. Meanwhile, pull or chop the pork into bite-size pieces and discard the bones.
- Return pork to the rice and stir to combine.
Notes
- I use brown rice in this recipe because its cook time is closer to that of pork chops.
- Although pork chops will technically cook in less time in the pressure cooker, I find longer cook times produce more tender pork chops.
- If you want to omit the cheese, I would recommend decreasing the amount of water to 1 cup.

Can you use frozen pork chops?
Chrysti Benner says
I haven’t tried it with frozen pork chops. The biggest down-side is that you can’t sear the chops when they’re frozen. You would also need to increase the cook time, but I can’t say for sure how long it would take as I haven’t tested it that way. I’d also suggest adding the seasonings to the liquid instead of directly to the pork chops (since you wouldn’t be browning them). If you give it a try, I’d love to know how it goes for you!
Laura says
I already need to double the recipe for my family of four right off the bat. So that’s 4 pork chops in the instant pot. Do you think I could successfully cook 8 chops at the same time? What amount of time would you recommend?
Chrysti Benner says
Hi Laura! I haven’t tried that many at once, so I can’t say for sure. I’d think it should work fine as long as you aren’t exceeding the maximum fill line of your IP. I would keep the cook time the same–it will just take longer overall to sear that many pork chops, and a little bit longer to come to pressure. Hope that helps!
Tiffany says
Well this was a major fail for me. I kept getting the burn warning. I followed recipe to a tee
Chrysti Benner says
I’m so sorry to hear that, Tiffany! As long as the liquid amount was correct and the pot was deglazed, I’m not sure why you’d get the burn warning (unless the pot wasn’t sealed well?).

How much broth do I use with white rice instead of brown rice and how long do I cook
Chrysti Benner says
Hi Jo! Unfortunately, I haven’t tested this with white rice. I use brown rice instead of white in this recipe because the cook time for brown rice is closer to the cook time of pork chops. White rice cooks in just a few minutes, which wouldn’t be long enough for the pork chops to cook through.
Terry H. says
You say add water and scrape. Do you then remove the water and add the chicken broth ?
Chrysti Benner says
Hi Terry! It should say broth, not water. Thank you for catching my mistake–I’ve corrected it for clarity!
Tracy L says
What a perfect weeknight recipe! I threw it together and everyone loved it. I put in 4 pork chops and doubled the rice! Thanks!
Chrysti Benner says
Thank you so much, Tracy! I love hearing that it was a hit! 🙂
Wes says
If I double the rice and chops, do I also double the broth?
Chrysti Benner says
Hi Wes! Yes, I would double the broth as well. Enjoy! 🙂
David Aydelotte says
I just made this today and we loved it! I substituted white rice (non-instant) for brown since I don’t like brown rice and thick boneless pork chops. I used the same cook time and it was fabulous.
Chrysti Benner says
Thank you so much, David! I’m glad to hear that you enjoyed it. Thanks for sharing your tweak with white rice, too! 🙂
