If you’ve ever been to an apple orchard in the fall, you probably know all about the delicious goodies on sale at the farm stand, including fresh-pressed cider, apple fritters, and apple cider donuts.

Since I’ve already shared how to make an apple cider donut cake at home, I knew I wanted to figure out how to make homemade apple fritters.

But I don’t enjoy frying things in my house. Aside from being messy and smelly, it adds a lot of calories, especially when you can just use your oven instead.

Making these baked apple fritters was easier than I thought! They’re soft and fluffy, with plenty of apple bits throughout, and with a lightly crispy exterior that’s coated with a silky glaze.

They make a great fall breakfast or dessert, with just a few ingredients.

Making Apple Fritters in the Oven

To keep things simple, I used Bisquick as the base of these fritters. I make all sorts of recipes with Bisquick, so I always keep it on hand.

I added a little cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice to the mix, because I wanted a hint of warm spice without overpowering the apples.

One of the secrets I use when baking fritters is double-glazing. This is what helps give the exterior a texture more similar to frying.

First, I bake the fritters. Then I brush them with powdered sugar glaze and pop them under the broiler. This makes the glaze bubbly and crackly. Just be careful not to burn them!

Remove them from the oven, let them cool for a few minutes, then brush them with glaze AGAIN. This is the layer that will cool and harden into a satiny smooth finish.

How to Make Baked Fresh Apple Fritters

It’s really easy to make this fall treat.

Ingredients You’ll Need

  • Bisquick baking mix
  • Sugar
  • Cinnamon
  • Nutmeg
  • Allspice
  • Applesauce
  • Milk
  • Egg
  • Vegetable oil
  • Apples
  • Powdered sugar
  • Vanilla extract

How to Make It:

Make the batter. First, you’ll whisk together the Bisquick, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice.

Then add in the applesauce, milk, egg, and oil. Stir to combine.

Fold in the apples, mixing just until they’re incorporated throughout the batter.

Scoop and bake. Then, you’ll scoop the batter out onto a parchment-lined baking sheet.

Transfer them to the oven and bake for about 11-13 minutes. While they bake, make the glaze by whisking together powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract.

Once they come out of the oven, turn on the broiler and brush the fritters with some glaze. Return them to the oven and broil for about a minute.

Glaze again. Then, you’ll let them cool for just a couple of minutes before brushing them with more glaze.

Allow to cool at least long enough for the glaze to harden, about 15-20 minutes. You can enjoy the fritters warm or let them cool completely.

Notes and Adaptations:

  • Leftover fritters can be covered and stored at room temperature for up to 2-3 days. However, the glaze does start to soften over time, so I prefer to eat them when they’re freshly baked.
  • I recommend dicing your apples pretty small. Since these aren’t in the oven very long, larger apple chunks won’t have much time to soften up.

Baked Apple Fritters

Author: Chrysti Benner
Serves: 12 Servings
Prep Time 10 minutes
Cook Time 12 minutes
These glazed apple fritters are baked instead of fried, so you can enjoy the classic fall treat but in a healthier version.

Ingredients

For the Fritters:

  • 2 cups Bisquick baking mix
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon allspice
  • 1/3 cup applesauce
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 cup peeled and diced Granny Smith apples

For the Glaze:

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons milk

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 400F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside.
  • In a mixing bowl, whisk together Bisquick, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice.
  • Add applesauce, milk, and egg. Stir to combine into a batter.
  • Add diced apples and stir to incorporate.
  • Scoop batter out into 12 rounds, placing each on the prepared baking sheet (I used a large cookie scoop for this). Transfer to preheated oven and bake for 11-13 minutes, or until golden-brown and cooked through.
  • While the fritters are baking, prepare the glaze by whisking together powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and milk.
  • Remove fritters from oven and turn on the broiler.
  • Using a pastry brush, brush a coating of glaze onto the tops of the warm fritters. Return the pan to the oven and broil for about a minute, which will cause the glaze to bubble up. Keep a close eye on them so they don't burn!
  • Remove pan from oven and let cool for a minute or two, then brush the tops of the fritters with the rest of the glaze. The glaze will harden to a satiny finish as the fritters cool.
  • Serve warm or allow to cool completely. Enjoy!

Notes

  • The process of double-glazing the fritters helps to give the exterior a more classic “fried” fritter texture.
  • Leftover fritters can be covered and stored at room temperature for up to 2-3 days.
  • I recommend dicing your apples pretty small. Since these aren’t in the oven that long, larger chunks will not have as much time to soften up.
