One of our favorite things to do in our home is read books together. We love choosing titles to read that correspond to seasons or holidays, to character traits we’re trying to develop, and that teach us about other cultures around the world.
Fall is such a fun and special season, with summer fading away, back-to-school happening and the holidays approaching.
I’ve compiled a list of Halloween books that includes many of our favorites. The books on this list are Halloween themed, but without gore and scary characters.
If you want autumn-themed books that aren’t related to Halloween, check out my list of the best fall books for kids!
We were able to find all of these at our local public library, which is always a win!

Best Halloween Books for Kids
Two Little Witches
This adorable book was given to us by my husband’s grandmother, who was an elementary reading teacher for many years.
It’s a fun exercise in counting, and the bright illustrations keep it from feeling too spooky.
Where’s My Mummy?
In this sweet book, baby mummy plays a game of hide and seek with his mother, while joined by some other friendly characters.
Duck & Goose: Honk! Quack! Boo!
My children love the adventures of Duck and Goose, and this Halloween-themed book with the beloved characters in costume is no different!
Scary, Scary Halloween
We love Eve Bunting books, and this is a fun and slightly spooky book for Halloween. Illustrated by Jan Brett (another one of our faves!), it involves rhyming story-telling and a surprise fun surprise at the end.
Skeleton for Dinner
This silly and spooky read is one of our favorites! Poor Skeleton falls prey to a misunderstanding, but one creature in the haunted forest helps solve the problem.
Crankenstein
While this book is not strictly for Halloween time, Crankenstein does have a Halloween-like feel to it.
In this book, a typical boy transforms into a Crankenstein monster. His day is turned around when he meets another Crankenstein just like him!
A Very Brave Witch
In this sweet book, a little witch has learned that there is much to fear when it comes to humans. That all changes on one Halloween night.
I love the message of this book that just because others are different, doesn’t mean they are scary.
The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything
My kids LOVE this book about a little old lady who was not afraid of anything…until one night when she had a big scare!
Such a fun and interactive read!
Too Many Pumpkins
When she was a child, Rebecca Estelle’s family didn’t have much money for a period of time, and they had to eat pumpkins every day for a month. As an adult, she hates pumpkins and wants nothing to do with them.
This book is a great example of the importance of relationships in our lives, and how we can grow to completely change our outlook.
Mercy Watson: Princess in Disguise
If your kids love Mercy Watson like mine do, they’ll love this book about everyone’s favorite porcine wonder and her Halloween costume!
Room on the Broom
Julia Donaldson writes such fun books, with rhyming stories and character-building morals.
In this sweetly spooky book, a witch learns the importance of helping others.
The Berenstain Bears Trick or Treat
In this classic from Bear Country, the bears gear up for a night of Trick-or-Treating with friends–with a little twist, of course!
