How Do You Use the Instant Pot for Soup?

I give thorough tips in my list of the best Instant Pot soups, but the general process has some similarities to cooking soup on the stove.

You may need to saute some ingredients first, particularly onions, celery, garlic, or other aromatics.

Then you’ll add the remaining ingredients (minus dairy or thickening agents) and pressure cook for the amount of time given in the recipe.

You’ll follow up with a natural release of pressure, then add any dairy or thickeners last.

Can You Use a Quick Release for Chicken Soup in the Instant Pot?

In general, a natural release is recommended for soups. This is partly because soups take up a lot of room in the pressure cooker, so they are likely to spew through the valve if you perform a quick release.

Additionally, many soups include starches or other ingredients that can foam, such as pasta, rice, or beans.

Not only that, but chicken in your soups will likely be more tender with a natural release.

If you’re in a hurry, you can sometimes allow a 5-10 minute natural release followed by a quick release, depending on amount and ingredients.

How Can You Thicken Instant Pot Chicken Soups?

If you need to add a thickener to your chicken soup, this can be done after pressure cooking.

Popular options include a slurry of cornstarch or flour and water.

Some soups are thickened by the addition of shredded cheese or even cream cheese, which melts and makes a creamy base.

Some people like to add canned coconut milk to thicken their soup, and others will use an immersion blender to puree some of the soup, which thickens the base.
