If your family loves donuts as much as mine does, they’re in for a treat with this easy recipe for homemade baked donuts!

Donuts are one of those breakfasts that my kids go bonkers for, and I can’t say that I blame them. What’s not to love about pillowy soft dough finished off with a sweet topping?

When I make homemade donuts, I bake them. I’m not a big fan of frying things in my house–it’s too much work, I don’t like the smell, and it’s a lot of clean-up (not to mention the fact that it’s not the healthiest option).

Often times, I make donut holes (AKA mini muffins), because they’re so easy. My family can’t get enough of these pumpkin donut bites, and gingerbread donut holes are a great Christmas morning breakfast.

But for a tried-and-true cake donut recipe that can be made year-round, these classic baked donuts made with Bisquick can’t be beat.

It’s one of my favorite recipes using Bisquick, and once you try them, you’ll see why!

Tips for the Best Bisquick Donuts

I love baking all sorts of things with Bisquick. From the best Bisquick biscuits to Bisquick brownies, strawberry cobbler, and blueberry muffins, it’s a super versatile mix to keep on hand.

But when it comes to donuts, there are a few key additions in this recipe that are crucial in order to get the best texture and taste.

First of all, I add some extra fat to the baking mix, such as sour cream and vegetable oil, which helps to keep the donuts soft and tender.

I add more sugar and vanilla extract, so they have enough sweetness and flavor.

Then my favorite addition is the toppings! We love adding a chocolate glaze that hardens to a satiny finish, and we also love the buttery cinnamon sugar topping.

You can take your pick or make a mix of both–either way, these donuts are sure to be a hit!

How to Make Baked Donuts Using Bisquick

It’s really easy to make these tasty treats!

In the recipe card below, I’ll give instructions for making the glaze or cinnamon sugar topping, but for just the basic donuts, here’s what you’ll need.

Ingredients You’ll Need

  • Bisquick baking mix
  • Sugar
  • Sour cream
  • Milk
  • Egg
  • Vegetable oil
  • Vanilla extract

How to Make It:

Mix the batter. First, you’ll combine the Bisquick, sugar, sour cream, milk, egg, oil, and vanilla extract in a mixing bowl.

Using an electric mixer, beat this together just until the batter is nice and smooth.

Bake. Then, you’ll spoon the batter into greased donut pans, filling each cavity about 2/3 full.

You can see the one donut below where I overfilled the well–it puffed up more and obscured the hole in the center.

Bake in a preheated oven for about 9-12 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center of a donut comes out clean. The donuts will also spring back if you press them with a finger.

Add toppings. Then, you’ll add the toppings of your choice! You can dip the top of the donuts in melted butter, followed by a mixture of cinnamon sugar, if you want a sugar-and-spice coating.

Or, dip the tops in a smooth chocolate icing that hardens as it sets. Of course, you can add some sprinkles before the chocolate dries, too!

Then you’re ready to serve and enjoy.

Notes and Adaptations:

  • Leftover donuts can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.
  • We love both versions of these donuts, but if you aren’t a fan of chocolate or cinnamon sugar, you can always dip the surface of the donut in powdered sugar instead.
  • If you don’t have an electric mixer, you can mix the batter by hand–just make sure it’s well-combined and smooth.

Easy baked donuts are made with Bisquick baking mix, creating soft and fluffy donuts that are baked in a donut pan. We love to top them with cinnamon sugar or a simple chocolate glaze that hardens–plus a few sprinkles!

Ingredients

For the Baked Donuts:

  • 2 cups Bisquick baking mix
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 1/3 cup sour cream
  • 2/3 cup milk
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

For Optional Cinnamon Sugar Topping:

  • 1/2 cup butter (melted)
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

For Optional Chocolate Glaze:

  • 1/2 cup semisweet chocolate chips
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons butter
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 3/4 cup powdered sugar (sifted)
  • 1-2 tablespoons sprinkles (optional)

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 400F and spray 12 wells of a donut pan with nonstick spray. Set aside.
  • In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment (or in a large mixing bowl with a handheld electric mixer), combine Bisquick baking mix, sugar, sour cream, milk, egg, oil, and vanilla extract. Mix on low speed to incorporate, then scrape down the sides of the bowl and mix on medium speed until just smooth.
  • Spoon the batter into the prepared wells of the donut pan. Bake in preheated oven for 9-12 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center of a donut comes out clean.
  • Remove from oven and let the donuts cool in the pan for about 5 minutes, then invert the donuts onto a wire rack (so the smoothest side is facing up) and proceed as directed below if you are adding a topping to the donuts.

If Using Cinnamon Sugar Topping:

  • Add melted butter to a shallow dish or bowl. In a separate shallow dish or bowl, combine sugar and cinnamon together.
  • While the donuts are still warm, dip the smooth top surface of a donut into the melted butter. Then dip the same surface into the cinnamon sugar mixture and return to the wire rack. Repeat with remaining donuts. Enjoy warm or allow to cool completely on the wire rack.

If Using Chocolate Glaze Topping:

  • Once the donuts are completely cooled, combine chocolate chips, butter, and milk in a small microwave-safe bowl. Microwave for 30 seconds, then stir well. If needed, microwave for an additional 15 seconds to melt completely.
  • Add sifted powdered sugar to the melted chocolate mixture, then whisk well until fully combined and smooth.
  • Dip the smooth top surface of each donut into the chocolate glaze, then return the donuts to the wire rack (with the chocolate side up). If desired, add sprinkles to the wet chocolate glaze. Let the donuts rest for about 15 minutes, which will allow the glaze to harden to a satiny finish.

Notes

  • Leftover donuts can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.
  • We love both versions of these donuts, but if you aren’t a fan of chocolate or cinnamon sugar, you can always dip the surface of the donut in powdered sugar instead.
  • If you don’t have an electric mixer, you can mix the batter by hand–just make sure it’s well-combined and smooth.
