If you’ve ever had chocolate cobbler before, you know what an indulgent treat it is.

Chocolate cake with a gooey, pudding-like center, typically topped with ice cream? It’s one of my weaknesses, for sure!

So when a reader commented on my Bisquick pecan cobbler recipe and asked if I had a recipe for a chocolate version, I knew in my chocoholic heart that I would gladly do some experimenting!

That’s how this chocolate cobbler made with Bisquick came to be, and I’m so glad it did.

It’s a rich, decadent cobbler with a melty, saucy center that pairs perfectly with the cake-like cobbler “crust,” making it a chocolate-lover’s dream come true.

Best of all, it’s really easy to make, using ingredients you probably already have on hand. It’s on my list of the best recipes made with Bisquick, and once you try it, you’ll see why!

Using Bisquick to Make Chocolate Cobbler

Many people know you can make biscuits with Bisquick, but it’s actually much more versatile than that.

You can make cinnamon rolls, dinner rolls, chicken and dumplings, banana muffins, brownies, chicken pot pie, pumpkin bars, and more with this handy boxed mix!

The beauty of using Bisquick baking mix is that there’s less measuring involved, because the baking mix already contains leavener and some fat.

So in the case of this cobbler, we need to add some other ingredients to make it rich, chocolatey, and sweet–but the Bisquick serves as the base.

It’s really easy to make this dessert.

  • Brown sugar

  • Milk
  • Chocolate chips

Layer topping and hot water. Then, you’ll sprinkle a mixture of brown sugar, sugar, and cocoa powder over the top of the chocolate chips.

Then, you’ll pour some hot water over everything. You don’t stir anything together here–we just leave it in the layers.

Bake. Then, you’ll transfer the dish to a preheated oven and bake it until the cake layer is cooked through, but the center is jiggly from the saucy pudding center.

Remove from oven and let it cool for at least 10-15 minutes, then scoop and serve it warm, topping with ice cream if you’d like!

Notes and Adaptations:

  • If the cobbler filling (the pudding-like sauce) is a little too runny for your preference, just let the cobbler cool some more. The sauce thickens up as it cools.
  • I prefer to serve the cobbler warm. If needed, you can microwave leftovers to warm it up.
  • This is a pretty rich dessert, so a little bit goes a long way!
  • If you don’t have chocolate chips on hand, you can omit them. They add some additional sweetness and deeper chocolate flavor, but aren’t necessary. You can also add 1/2 cup of chopped nuts if you’d like!

This deliciously decadent Bisquick chocolate cobbler is like a molten lava cake, with a sweet, pudding-like center and a layer of chocolate cake. It's the perfect indulgent treat for chocolate lovers!

Ingredients

For the Cobbler Batter:

  • 1 cup Bisquick baking mix
  • 3 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 2/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup butter (melted)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup milk

For Layering on Top:

  • 1/2 cup chocolate chips (I used semisweet)
  • 2/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar (lightly packed)
  • 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 1 1/4 cup very hot water

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350F and grease a deep dish pie plate (or an 8×8" baking dish). Set aside.
  • In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together Bisquick baking mix, cocoa powder, and sugar.
  • Add melted butter, vanilla extract, and milk, stirring until combined.
  • Spread batter into prepared baking dish, then sprinkle chocolate chips over the top.
  • In a small mixing bowl, prepare the topping by whisking together the sugar, brown sugar, and cocoa powder. Sprinkle this mixture evenly over the top of the batter and chocolate chips in the baking dish.
  • Pour very hot water over the top of everything in the baking dish. Do not stir!
  • Transfer dish to oven and bake for about 35-40 minutes. The center of the cobbler should be jiggly, but the top layer will be cake-like (it will be like a layer of cake with jiggly pudding-like sauce underneath).
  • Remove from oven and let cool for about 10-15 minutes, which will allow the sauce to thicken a bit as it cools. Then scoop and serve the cobbler warm, topping with vanilla ice cream if desired.

Notes

  • If the cobbler filling (the pudding-like sauce) is a little too runny for your preference, just let the cobbler cool some more. The sauce thickens up as it cools.
  • I prefer to serve the cobbler warm. If needed, you can microwave leftovers to warm it up.
  • This is a pretty rich dessert, so a little bit goes a long way!
  • If you don’t have chocolate chips on hand, you can omit them. They just add some additional sweetness and deeper chocolate flavor, but aren’t necessary. You can also add 1/2 cup of chopped nuts if you’d like!
